A function of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) is to identify and assess the mineral resources of the country and preparation of mineral resources maps.

Since 1903 GSMB (formally Geological Survey Department) is conducting mineral surveys throughout the country and the reports & maps of these surveys are available at the GSMB Library.

Using the available information of the mineral surveys, GSMB has published Mineral Resources map of the country and is available for sale in English, Sinhala and Tamil Languages.

GSMB is currently engaged in preparation of detailed provincial mineral survey map series covering all 09 provinces. Provincial mineral survey map of the Central Province has already been published and is available for sale in hard and digital (shp.) formats. Currently the other provincial mineral maps are being prepared.
